Women’s Pool A

India denied Ireland the chance to qualify for their first Olympic quarter-final as they beat South Africa 4-3 in the group’s first game of the day. Having only recorded their first win at Tokyo 2020 in their previous game – beating Ireland 1-0 – they overcame South Africa 4-3 to move to fourth in the group.

Ireland could still have qualified if they had beaten Great Britain but they came up short against the reigning Olympic champions, losing 2-0. That result meant Ireland ended the group in fifth, while Great Britain cemented a third-placed finish.

In the other game, the Dutch finished the group with a perfect record as they beat Germany 3-1 for their fifth straight win.

Women’s Pool B

China pulled off a surprise 3-2 victory over New Zealand in their final group game but it wasn’t enough to see them progress from the group stages. They finished level with the Black Sticks on six points apiece but an inferior goal difference saw their opponents progress instead of them.

Australia’s women continued their dominance of the pool as they beat Argentina 2-0 while Spain ended up second in the group as they swept past hosts Japan 4-1 to move ahead of Las Leonas in the table.
