Head Coaches of the nominated country are also Great Britain Head Coaches. Key tasks of the GBHL Board are thus to undertake:

• Approving GBHL’s submission to UK Sport for funding the GB performance plan – a supplementary submission to the individual funding submissions by each of the 3 home nations.
• Conducting a formal annual review of the three Home Nations, and in particular the nominated country’s progress against plan whereby the GBPD and Head Coaches present what they have achieved.
• In the run up to the Olympics, reviewing the performance of the nominated country against clearly defined criteria. A nominated country is then chosen for a further four years after the Olympics and FIH advised accordingly.
• Communications and fostering relationships with all partner organisations.
• Ensuring GBHL fulfils its statutory responsibilities.

It is likely that the GBHL Board will meet three times a year until the fourth year of the Olympic cycle when it is likely to meet more frequently.

Responsibilities of the President

The President is a Director of GBHL and acts as the chair of GBHL. The President is therefore responsible for all the policies of the company and initiatives taken by GBHL.

The President will, at the invitation of the GBHL Board, act as the official representative of GBHL

The President will chair all GBHL Board meetings unless unavailable. He/she will be responsible for working with the company secretary to ensure that appropriate agendas are set, meetings are held in a businesslike fashion, and that minutes are recorded and circulated to all Board members.

The President (or agreed deputy) acts as head of delegation of GB squads at all official international championship or trophy events at home or abroad as appropriate, including the Olympic Games. The President also acts as host, on behalf of GBHL, at international events staged in this country in which GB competes. He/she will work with the GBCOO to ensure that such duties are clearly divided between them at such events.

The President will be responsible for liaison with the GBCOO.

The President will be responsible for liaising with the FIH, BOA and UK Sport for any GBHL constitutional or funding matters but may choose to delegate to the nominated country specific duties as he/she sees fit.

The President chairs any GBHL General Meetings.

To enable the President to be fully briefed on the performance of the nominated country he/she would be expected to attend Board meetings of the nominated country or at the very least the performance related items on such agendas.

The President is also to be available to attend a board meeting of each of the 2 non nominated countries once a year.

The President is responsible for ensuring that relevant communiqués are issued to the press as and when it is necessary to do so.

The President is responsible for ensuring statutory matters are adhered to by GBHL officers.

Key Skills and Qualities Required

The President fulfils a vital representative role for the sport. The role requires dedication and a passion for the sport, though as important are the following skills/qualities:

• A keen strategic mind to assess key issues that may need to be tackled.
• The ability to sum up complex issues concisely.
• The maturity and experience to chair a Board of individuals with diverse backgrounds.
• The ability to build relationships and influence without authority.
• Knowledge of elite team sport, preferably hockey.
• Knowledge and understanding of the key funding agencies.
• Knowledge of the intricacies of politics in sport.
• Experience of being a company director.

Time Commitment

The President is normally appointed for a period of four years.

The President’s duties are estimated to require about 20-30 days per annum on average.

As both the men’s and women’s squad settle into their new centralised training programmes this week, Great Britain and England Hockey are delighted to announce the athletes involved in the senior international women’s programme.

Jason Lee, appointed as the new Head Coach of the England and Great Britain women’s team back in February, has named 29 athletes in his squad. With the continued and invaluable support of Investec, specialist bank and asset manager, and National Lottery funding , the coaching team and athletes will spend the next four years preparing for and building up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

After winning bronze at the London 2012 Olympics, 10 medallists return to the side with their sights firmly set on an exciting summer of tournaments and the road ahead. Reading’s Kate Walsh, Alex Danson, Emily Maguire and Helen Richardson; Leicester’s Hannah Macleod and Nicola White; Slough’s Ashleigh Ball; Surbiton’s Georgie Twigg; Loughborough Students’ Laura Unsworth and Bowdon Hightown’s Sally Walton all return to the fold.

And with several other members of the London 2012 squad announcing their retirement Lee has called upon the experience of Reading’s Susie Gilbert and Sam Quek alongside Beckie Herbert of Pinoke (NED) and Maddie Hinch of Leicester as well as bringing in some slightly less familiar faces.

Six players have been called up to the centralised programme following successful international debuts at the Investec Challenge in South Africa earlier this year; Loughborough Students’ Giselle Ansley, University of Durham’s Steph Elliott, Sarah Haycroft of Surbiton, Jo Leigh of Clifton and Beeston’s Captain Hollie Webb and Ellie Watton.

England and Great Britain Captain, Kate Walsh, sees a bright future with the new squad, “It’s very exciting to restart the centralised training programme with a fresh coaching set-up and new faces in the squad. We’ve got a really good blend of youth and experience in the side and looking to the summer ahead, with the Investec World League and the European Championships, I can’t wait to see how the team gels and progresses.”

Looking ahead over the next four years, Lee has named five Scottish athletes in the side. The new faces of Alison Bell, Amy Gibson, Nikki Kidd and Morag McLellan join Olympian Emily Maguire; however the initial focus this summer will very much be on the home nations for both Scotland and England.

England’s first world level tournament will be on home turf from 22-30 June at the Investec World League Semi Final which takes place in London and then Scotland will join them in Pool B action at the TriFinance EuroHockey Championships from 17-25 August in Antwerp, Belgium.

Speaking about the road ahead, Lee is eager to start working with his full-time centralised team of coaches and athletes, “The new squad represents a very healthy blend of exciting young talent, those athletes who have already experienced an Olympic cycle and a small group of experienced and world class athletes who understand very well the rigours of Olympic preparation. With a new coaching team and new athletes, we know there’s a lot of hard work to be done before the Investec World League in June, but I’m confident we have the right balance to take us up to the next level over this four year cycle.”

Great Britain and England Performance Director Danny Kerry added, "Our centralised programme remains cutting edge and will allow the very best preparation of the squad over the coming cycle.. I would like to thank the on-going support of the National Lottery and its key role in supporting the funding of performance sport, UK Sport and the EIS in its custodianship of our high performance Olympic sport system.”

Great Britain centralised trianing squad

For four of the London 2012 medallists and 12 of the squad in total their immediate focus is both international and domestic hockey as they prepare to do battle for their clubs at the Investec Women’s Finals Weekend at Reading Hockey Club this weekend (20-21 April).

Nicola White and Maddie Hinch will be hoping to defend their title with Leicester as they take on Georgie Twigg and Sarah Haycroft’s Surbiton side in their semi final at 15:15, whilst Reading stalwarts Kate Walsh, Alex Danson, Sam Quek, Susie Gilbert and Emily Maguire will be going for glory as they take on Susannah Townsend and Dilly Newton of Canterbury on home turf in the second semi final at 17:30.
Bobby Crutchley named England men's coach

http://www.greatbritainhockey.co.uk/library/asp/object_display_link.asp?objectid=21482&objectType=news&objectTitle=Bobby%2BCrutchley%2Bnamed%2BEngland%2Bmen%2527s%2Bcoach&params=5EA473444B2FF8BD97E6CF9DD5C614668A2E14690D0895C12AAD2FA15C9A77625D01017DE509D792C9CEA74A3F261FCFE3E6E17DBD0EC95737

England Hockey is delighted to announce that, following a comprehensive external recruitment process, Bobby Crutchley has been appointed to the role of head coach of the England men’s team. Crutchley, 42, has been an assistant coach to the senior men’s programme since 2005 and was part of the Great Britain coaching staff at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. He succeeds Jason Lee who was recently appointed as head coach of the senior women’s squad.

As Head Coach of the men’s programme, Crutchley will be responsible for the selection, preparation, coaching and performance of the England and GB teams and senior national squad, and the teams’ results in international competitions. The position will see the former Bath Buccaneers and University of Bath coach lead the programme for the 2013-2016 Olympic cycle taking in the 2013 and 2015 European Championships, the World Cup and Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. His first major tournament in charge will be the FIH Hockey World League semi final in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from 29 June – 7 July.

Danny Kerry, England Hockey Performance Director, said: “I am really excited about Bobby’s appointment. Fundamentally he believes in the athletes and the programme we have and that is the key building block for success. Bobby demonstrated not just an in-depth understanding of the challenges that come with this leadership position but also a genuine insight into what needs to and can happen. The insight that our coaches have to coaching and leading at this highest of levels, I believe, are a competitive edge that will stand us in good stead over the coming years. I look forward to working with Bobby and feel the programme and team is in the most capable and ambitious of hands.”

Speaking after being appointed, Crutchley said: “As someone who has a strong passion for coaching and for hockey in Great Britain, I am absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity.

“With personnel changes, following the London Olympics, there will be significant challenges, particularly in the short term. However, I am confident that the team can evolve to continue to challenge for medals at the highest level.”

Sally Munday, England Hockey Chief Executive, said: “I am absolutely delighted to see Bobby progress into the Head Coach role. He has been an excellent assistant coach and through the recruitment process has demonstrated that he has the knowledge and skills to step up to leading the men’s programme. Bobby’s ambition reflects our values and his passion for English and British success shines through.”

During his time as assistant to Jason Lee, Crutchley helped coach England through their rise up the world rankings from 11th to their current standing of fourth. He was in the dugout when England won the European Championship title for the first time in 2009 and the silver medal at the Champions Trophy the following year, England’s best ever result on the world stage. England finished just outside the medals at the 2010 World Cup, coming fourth, before another European medal followed – bronze - in 2011. He coached the Great Britain men’s team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in which GB finished fifth and at London 2012 where the host nation narrowly missed out on a medal to Australia.

Crutchley has been involved in coaching the national teams since 1997, first as a consultant, then as Assistant Coach to the senior women’s squad from 2003 until 2004 before joining Jason Lee’s men’s coaching team in 2005. In 2002 and 2007 he served as Head Coach to the U21 England men, taking on the same role with the Great Britain U21 men at the 2007 and 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

Off the pitch, he successfully completed UK Sport’s Elite Coach Programme in 2010 and more recently, following the London 2012 Olympic Games, completed his Masters degree in Sports Coaching at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

As a player, Crutchley represented his country 80 times and was a member of the first England men’s team to compete in hockey at the Commonwealth Games, where he picked up a bronze medal in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. He played for England at the 1994 World Cup and 1999 Champions Trophy, and for Great Britain at the 1994 edition of the Champions Trophy. In 1996, he was named UK Hockey Writers’ UK Player of the Year. He retired from playing international hockey in 1999.

A high scoring forward, Crutchley, from the Wirral, began his playing career at Neston before moving south to play for Hounslow in the national league. A spell in Australia followed with Canberra before he returned to the UK to play for Cannock, sandwiching a short stint in Milan at Cernusco. A well known goal threat, Crutchley topped the goal scoring charts in England, Australia and Italy during his playing career.

He began his coaching career in Sheffield, where he coached from 1991-1993 after completing his course in business studies at Sheffield City Polytechnic. He continued to coach throughout his playing career and following his retirement from international hockey, took the opportunity to lead Bath Buccaneers and Bath University’s hockey clubs.

With Bobby Crutchley and Jason Lee confirmed as the head coaches of the senior men’s and women’s programmes, a further announcement concerning the appointments of their assistant coaches will be made in early March.

The event, a World Cup qualification tournament, will be staged as part of England Hockey’s ongoing commitment to fulfilling the legacy provided by the London 2012 Olympic Games. It will offer thousands of sports fans the opportunity to see world class hockey live in England again after watching the Great Britain women’s team win Olympic bronze at the Riverbank Arena.

Continuing their support of the women’s team, Investec will be the headline sponsor for the weeklong tournament, which will take place at the University of Westminster's Quintin Hogg Memorial Sports Ground in Chiswick, London from 22-30 June 2013. The hosting of this event means that the next Investec London Cup will take place in 2014.

England Hockey Chief Executive, Sally Munday, is thrilled with the decision to award the tournament to England, “Following the success of hockey at the Olympic Games last summer we have seen unprecedented interest from people wanting to play and watch our sport. The Investec World League Semi Final provides the perfect opportunity for the British public to see many of our Olympians on home turf again after our women’s team captured the love of the nation last summer. As the only British team to win a medal at the London Games we are looking to continue the increase in publicity for women’s sport and our aspiration to inspire a generation.”

On announcing England as hosts, FIH President Leandro Negre said, “I am delighted that the Investec World League Semi Final tournament will be played in England. This is a great start to the London 2012 hockey legacy for the country. I would especially like to thank England Hockey for stepping in at short notice to host such an important FIH event.”

Raymond van Niekerk, Investec, commented, “It is fantastic to be welcoming world class hockey back to London. Women’s hockey has enjoyed a worthy boost following the success of the GB team at the Olympics and the Investec World League will help to maintain the popularity of hockey this summer. It’s a great honour to extend our support to the event and we look forward to seeing the teams in action this June.”

Hockey was the third largest spectator sport at London 2012 with more than 630,000 people visiting the Riverbank Arena to watch the best teams in the world. Following the Games and a successful Hockey Nation campaign, an extra 30,000 adults picked up a stick during 2012, making hockey the biggest growing team sport last year.

Eight nations will compete at the Investec World League in London. Alongside England, Olympic silver medallists Argentina, Australia and China all gain automatic qualification to the tournament given their top eight ranking. The remaining four women’s teams will be decided following the completion of the World League Round 2 in Brazil in March.

England captain and three-times Olympian Kate Walsh is delighted with the opportunity the tournament will bring: “Having the Investec World League in London will be fantastic for players and spectators alike. The support during the Olympics was incredible and we are delighted to have gained a lot of new fans who will be able to come and watch us in action again. Home support can make all the difference to our performances and we can’t wait to recreate the Riverbank atmosphere all over again. Hosting this tournament really shows the legacy of London 2012 starting to take shape for our sport.”

Following the success of the Investec London Cup in 2011 and 2012, England Hockey is continuing its partnership with the University of Westminster to host the Investec World League.
