One month to go...with Kate Walsh

Kate Walsh
With just a month to go until the Opening Ceremony of London 2012, GB captain Kate Walsh has been speaking to the Manchester Evening News about leading her country and how she got into hockey.

The 32 year old from Stockport will proudly lead the side out when they start their bid for gold with their first group game against Japan on July 29.

And even though Walsh is the most experienced player in the 16-strong squad, having played at two previous Olympic Games as well as making 103 appearances for GB and a further 184 for England, she admits it will be difficult to hold back the tears when the teams line-up next month.

“Leading your country at an Olympic Games being played in your country is such a massive honour,” said Walsh.

“I have goose bumps just thinking about leading the side out for that first game in front of what is expected to be a full house.

“And then when the national anthem starts, I am sure there will be a few teary eyes around.”
