The History Makers book nominated for top award

GB win gold at Rio 2016
Two hockey writers have been nominated for the 2018 Sports Book Awards with their recollection of Team GB’s women’s hockey Olympic gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Sarah Juggins and Richard Stainthorpe co-wrote ‘The History Makers’ in the aftermath of Team GB’s remarkable, dramatic shoot-out triumph in Rio de Janeiro and have been rewarded with a nomination in the Thomson Reuters Illustrated Book of the Year category.

Juggins and Stainthorpe, who also work in the media department at the International Hockey Federation (FIH), expressed their delight at the nomination.

Stainthorpe said: “To be honest, I’m still struggling to get my head around it. As two seasoned hockey writers, this was very much a dream project for us – the stars aligned. We approached GB Hockey about it in the weeks following the gold medal win, outlining our vision to create something that would contribute to the legacy of the achievement whilst also bringing some deserved attention to women’s team sport. They backed us wholeheartedly, and we cannot thank them enough for trusting us with this.”

Juggins said: “We really wanted to celebrate what the women did in Rio as we felt it was a watershed moment not just for women’s hockey but for women’s team sport in general. People like Alex Danson, Kate Richardson-Walsh, Georgie Twigg and Maddie Hinch are incredible role models for young girls and boys everywhere. It is a responsibility that they have completely embraced in an effort to inspire the next generation of sportspeople.”

Stainthorpe also recognised the help of two of the sport’s best photographers – Dutchmen Frank Uijlenbroek and Koen Suyk – in helping to bring the book to life.

“The nomination is fantastic recognition not just for Sarah and myself, but also to our friends Frank and Koen. They are without doubt two of the best hockey photographers in the world, and their iconic imagery brought the whole project to life.” More information about The History Makers can be found at https://pitchpublishing.co.uk/shop/history-makers

The awards will be presented at a star-studded ceremony, which takes place at Lord’s Cricket Ground on June 7.

It is an exciting time for the sport of hockey here in the UK. This summer, London will host the Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup 2018, with 16 of the world’s best international teams fighting for the title at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford. The competition takes place from 21 July - 5 August 2018, with Danny Kerry’s England aiming to win the World Cup for the first time in their history.
