Obituary: Neil Nugent

Neil Nugent
It is with great sadness that Great Britain Hockey has learned the passing of Neil Nugent, who died earlier this month aged 91.

Neil (pictured on the right of the above photo in his Games balzer) was a member of the GB side that won bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, scoring the winner in their second round game against Belgium, as well as an RAF Wing Commander.

However he and team-mate Sir Derek Day did not receive their medals until 2010 having not been able to feature in all of the fixtures due to injury, with only 11 medals available at the time.

But thanks to Richard Leman – the president of GB Hockey – and a number of others the two were duly handed their medals in a special ceremony during the 2010 Home Nations Cup.
