Gold Coast Day 9 - Narrow defeats for England & Scotland, Wales end on a high

Creed v Australia CWG 2018
Despite putting in a momentous semi-final shift England’s men – like their women – will be fighting for Commonwealth bronze after being beaten 2-1 by Australia.

The hosts – who have won each of the five previous Commonwealth golds – came flying out of the traps and scored after just 26 seconds as Trent Mitton caught England unawares.

Ian Sloan brought his side level early in the second half but Mitton would strike again from a penalty corner 10 minutes from time, meaning Barry Middleton’s 413th international appearance – which moves him second on the all-time list – wouldn’t end in a victory.

Scotland’s men would suffer the same fate as they also lost 2-1 to Malaysia in the 5th/6th play-off.

Having already guaranteed their best ever Commonwealth Games finish the Blue Sticks looked like they’d finish in the best possible fashion as Alan Forsyth gave them an early lead with his fourth goal of the tournament.

But strikes from Sharil Saabah and Amirol Arshad gave the side ranked 11 places above Scotland at 12th in the world the win.

On the other hand Wales’ men ended a thoroughly impressive tournament in a positive fashion as they produced an upset to beat South Africa and finish ninth.

It was yet another penalty corner masterclass from Zach Jones’ team with James Carson netting two and Gareth Furlong the other in a thoroughly entertaining game played under glorious morning sunshine at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.

The final day of hockey action at the 2018 Commonwealth Games will see both England’s men and women facing India in their pursuit of bronze medals at the following times:

England W v India W – 01:30 BST
England M v India M – 10:00 BST
