Gold Coast Day 7 - England just lose classic game, classification fixtures decided

Eng v Ind CWG 2018
England's men will face hosts and five-time Commonwealth Games champions Australia in the semi-finals of Gold Coast 2018 after they narrowly lost 4-3 to India in a memorable game.

Having trailed 2-1 with nine minutes to play, England thought they had won the game by the end of the 56th minute as Liam Ansell and Sam Ward converted penalty corners to add to David Condon’s first-half effort.

But two goals in the final two minutes from Varun Kumar and Mandeep Singh saw India to the unlikeliest of victories, meaning it is they who finish top of Pool B and take on New Zealand in their semi-final.

There was also a narrow loss for Wales’ women to Malaysia earlier in the day, a goal from Hanis Onn being enough to claim victory for her side while Farah Yahya was once again superb in goal to keep out a Welsh barrage in the second half.

That result means Wales will play Ghana in the 9th/10th play-off, while a 5-1 win for Canada over the African side means Scotland’s women will face the Malaysians in the battle for 7th/8th place.

Scotland’s men will also face Malaysia – this time in the 5th/6th play-off – as Canada beat South Africa 2-0 to ensure the Blue Sticks finish third in their group on goal difference, meaning they will record their highest ever Commonwealth Games finish whatever the result.

That result also means that Wales’ men will face South Africa in the 9th/10th play-off on Friday.

The action returns tomorrow with the women’s classification games, with the Home Nations in action at the following times:

Wales W v Ghana W (9th/10th play-off) – 04:30 BST
Malaysia W v Scotland W (7th/8th play-off) – 06:45 BST
England W v New Zealand W (semi-final) – 10:00 BST
