Gold Coast Day 5 - England through to semis, Scotland thump Ghana

England beat Malaysia CWG 2018
England’s women qualified for their sixth consecutive Commonwealth Games semi-final with a 3-0 win over Malaysia.

Goals from Ellie Watton, Hannah Martin and Sophie Bray ensured safe passage for Danny Kerry’s team into the final four, with the former’s opener being the highlight of the game as she beautifully swept the ball past Farah Yahya.

However the Malaysian ‘keeper was to be the star of the day as she pulled off several superb saves, including keeping out two penalty strokes as Malaysia tested England’s patience in a gruelling game.

That result also means that Wales’ women will not be able to qualify for the semi-finals after they lost 2-0 to South Africa earlier in the day.

They put up a strong effort against opponents ranked 12 places above them but ultimately goals from Candice Manuel and Jade Mayne secured victory for the South Africans.

Scotland’s women kept their slim hopes of qualifying alive as they outclassed Ghana 5-0 in the day’s second match, with goals coming from Amy Brodie, Katie Robertson, Nikki Alexander-Lloyd, Millie Brown and Robyn Collins.

Despite that result though only a victory by four goals or more against hosts and reigning champions Australia tomorrow will be good enough to see the Tartan Hearts qualify for the semis after the Hockeyroos drew 0-0 with New Zealand.

That will be the final fixture of the sixth day of Gold Coast 2018, with each of the men’s teams returning to the pitch earlier in the day having had a day’s rest:

England M v Wales M – 05:30 BST
