Gold Coast 2018 Day 1 - Wales stun India, wins for England & Scotland

Townsend Goal v South Africa CWG 2018
Wales’ women produced a brilliant performance to stun India and take a 3-2 victory on the opening day of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Despite being ranked 16 places below their opponents - lying 26th in the latest FIH standings - the Welsh started the game on top and opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Lisa Daley cleverly diverted Jo Westwood’s cross into the Indian goal.

Sian French then doubled the lead in the second quarter as she deceived Savita with a calm penalty stroke before India scored twice to bring the scores level, only for Natasha Marke-Jones to pounce on a mistake and secure a momentous winner with three minutes remaining.

There was plenty of drama too in the final game of the day as Scotland’s men also produced an upset by beating South Africa 4-2 to get their Games off to the perfect start.

The Blue Sticks played some scintillating hockey and raced into a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, with Kenny Bain converting a wonderful team move for their second being the highlight.

Robert Harwood and Alan Forsyth were also on target in the opening fifteen minutes before Bain scored a second to secure the win in the final quarter after South Africa temporarily dragged themselves back into the game by scoring twice in the third quarter.

England’s women also got their campaign off to a winning start over South Africa with a comfortable 2-0 win, Susannah Townsend and Grace Balsdon scoring the goals, while Wales’ men picked up an impressive point with a 1-1 draw against Pakistan with Rupert Shipperley on target.

There was no such success for Scotland’s women however as they lost 6-1 to a confident New Zealand outfit, with two goals each for Rose Keddell and Shiloh Gloyn, while Alison Howie grabbed a late consolation for her team.
