International superstars to inspire the East London community

East London Project launch
Rio gold medallist Helen Richardson-Walsh and current Great Britain and England player Emily Defroand are to be the faces of East London hockey project in the build up next summer’s Women’s Hockey World Cup.

This morning they helped out in a girl's PE lesson at Walthamstow Academy alongside volunteers from Waltham Forest Hockey Club.

This is just the start as Emily and Helen will be getting involved in a wide range of activities to inspire the future to get involved with hockey. The East London Project's aim is to take hockey out to local communities as well as supporting local clubs to develop and grow.

Emily Defroand said: "I am honoured to be a part of the project, especially as this school is just round the corner from where I grew up.

"It is a fantastic project to be involved in and to be alongside hockey legend Helen Richardson-Walsh.

"It is brilliant to be taking advantage of a home World Cup next summer. It is great to be getting the message out into East London and trying to get more exposure in the community to get more people involved in this great sport."

Emily Defroand East London Project

Halfway into the project we have engaged 2,715 local children from 25 secondary schools and 99 primary schools. We have seen 1,300 children attend the Champions Trophy in 2016 and over 2,500 attended the Hero World League Semi-Final in June 2017. Eight partner clubs have grown by 537 members in two years with 2,003 adults involved in project activity.

We are very excited to have these two athletes involved in helping develop hockey in East London ahead and beyond of the Women's World Cup next summer.

If your school is interested in increasing girls participation in team sports then sign up to Team Up - it is a free resource for teachers which includes opportunities for free event tickets plus a chance to have an athlete visit your school!
