Champions Trophy Schedule Released
18.10.07Great Britain received a late call up to participate in the Champions Trophy last month (September) following a change of venue to Malaysia after Australia and Spain refused to travel to the original host country, Pakistan. The change of venue resulted in a change of format turning into an eight team tournament as opposed to a six team tournament, hence Britain's invite. The eight participating teams are:
- Australia (Olympic Champion)
- Germany (World Champion)
- Netherlands (Champions Trophy Champion)
- Spain (3rd BDO World Cup 2006)
- Korea (4th BDO World Cup 2006)
- Great Britain (in lieu of England – 5th BDO World Cup 2006)
- Pakistan (6th BDO World Cup 2006)
- Malaysia (host)
Great Britain will begin their campaign on Thursday 29 November against recent European champions the Netherlands who overcame Spain in the EuroHockey Nations Championships final which took place in Manchester back in August. This will be a tough opening encounter for Britain as the Dutch are also the current holders of the Champions Trophy, overcoming Germany in last year's competition in Terrassa.
Great Britain will then take on world champions Germany the following day, a country who experienced a disappointing European campaign in August when they finished in fourth spot and as a result missed out on an automatic qualification spot for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Malaysia are next up for GB on 2 December followed by current Olympic champions Australia on 3 December and original host country Pakistan on 5 December. The final two games in the round robin stage of the competition will be against Spain on 6 December and Korea on 8 December before the classification matches take place on Sunday 9 December.
The Champions Trophy is typically a tournament for the top six countries in the world, so this will be a tough competition and a good warm-up for Great Britain before they fly out to Chile in March for the Olympic Qualifiers in Santiago.
