School Games Day 3

The fantastic standard of Hockey, and weather, continued on day three at Loughborough University, for the 2017 School Games.  Congratulations to England Blue who today won the Boys competition with their last gasp draw against Scotland; the girls’ competition is still up for grabs with the final two matches taking place at 10:00 on Sunday.

England White 0-4 Ulster (13:00)

Ulster produced a fine performance to dismantle England White four goals to nil, with Matthew Morris opening the scoring on 18 minutes. Skipper Fergus Gibson scored from two penalty corners, either side of an Oliver Kid goal to complete the scoring for Ulster.

England Blue 4-4 Scotland (18:00)

Avoiding defeat for England Blue would seal their status as Champions. Scotland had other ideas when they took the lead on 17 minutes from Struan Walker, in what turned out to be a rollercoaster of a match.  England Blue turned the score on its head with two goals in two minutes, the first from Ethan Hoddle and the second from Max Liebenschutz-Jones. Incredibly, three minutes later, Scotland were back ahead as Andrew McConnell scored a quick brace. Max Deniff restored parity in this classic match with a goal on 48 minutes, but a ten minutes later Scotland were back ahead with Ewen Mackie netting from a penalty corner. Within 60 seconds though, England Blue were back level with Josh Powell scoring and with that goal they sealed the 2017 Boys championship.

England Red 3-2 England Blue (11:00)

These two really served up a cracker to get day three underway, with England Red coming out on top by the one goal. Amelia Harvey put England Blue ahead from a penalty corner on nine minutes, but Annabelle Denly equalised for the Reds on 25 minutes. Robyn Bentley then gave England Red the lead on 33 minutes, before the blues restored parity on 47 minutes, with Caroline Spence netting. However, Bentley grabbed her second of the match with only four minutes left on the clock to give England Red the victory.

Ulster 5-1 Scotland (16:00)

Katie McKee was the hat-trick heroine for Ulster Girls as they put five goals past Scotland. The win has put them 1 point clear of England Blue going into the final day. Sophie McDowell and Rebecca McCulloch opened the scoring for Ulster before McKee bagged her hat-trick. Scotland’s consolation goal was scored by Olivia Bell.
