School Games Day 2

Day 2 at Loughborough University saw eight matches take place, four in each of the boys’ and girls’ competitions. Again the spectators were treated some excellent entertainment from England, Scotland and Ulster’s stars of the future.

Boys

Scotland 4-4 England Red (11:00)

It was an epic eight-goal thriller to start the day off on Pitch 1. Jack Stubbings gave England Red the lead on 6 minutes. Scotland turned the game round with two goals in the five minutes, the scorers Andrew McConnell and Jamie Golden. The Reds equalised on 40 minutes, with Callum Bell netting from a penalty corner. However, Scotland surged ahead seven minutes later with Golden getting his second of the match.  In an epic final two minutes of the match, Thomas Russell scored twice in the space of 60 seconds to give England Reds the lead, and what most inside the ground thought the victory. But prior to the full time hooter, Scotland scored an equaliser from Struan Walker to snatch a share the spoils.

England White 1-7 England Blue (13:00)

Pitch 1 spectators were treated to another eight goals, although this affair was much more one sided than the previous. Despite the scoring not starting until the 26th minute, England Blue scored seven goals to claim an emphatic victory. Braces from Ethan Hoddle, Max Deniff, Max Liebenschutz- Jones and a goal from Scott Jack completed the scoring. England White’s consolation came from Michael Moran.

Ulster 3-1 Scotland (16:00)

Two goals in the first quarter, from Mark Barlow and Fergus Gibson, got Ulster off to a flyer. Scotland responded on 27 minutes with a goal from a penalty corner, scored by Ewan Mackie. With 12 minutes remaining, Ulster sealed with win, Harry Down netting the goal to give them a two goal cushion in an evenly contested affair.

England Red 1-2 England Blue (18:00)

In the final match of the day, it was a lower scoring affair but with plenty of high quality play and excitement. Max Liebenschutz-Jones opened the scoring and Harry Goodall put the Blue’s two-nil up on 52 minutes. A goal three minutes later for the Reds, scored by Thomas Russell made it a tight last few minutes to the match, but England Blue held onto victory.

Girls

Scotland 3-4 England White (11:00)

Spectators on pitch 2 were treated to a real cracker to start the day’s session off. Scotland took the lead through Annabel Ballantyne on 10 minutes, but six minutes later they were behind as goals from Zoe Ramsay and Alex Went put England White 2-1 up at the beginning of the second quarter. Scotland then scored two goals in 60 seconds, firstly Erin Stevens from a penalty stroke and then Tara Aitchison, giving them a lead to take into half time. England White managed to turn it round to take the victory, with goals coming from Georgina Maplethorpe and Isabelle Childs.

England Red 2-4 Ulster (13:00)

It was Ulster who reigned victorious in another high scoring affair. However, they had to come back from a two goal deficit as England Red stormed into a two-nil lead inside 10 minutes, with goals from Olivia Back and Emilia Proctor. Ulster started their come back on 22 minutes when Sophie McDowell scored and Kate Gourley grabbed the equaliser. Ulster took the lead with 15 minutes to go, Katie McKee scoring the crucial goal, and the win was complete with a goal on 57 minutes from Rachel Houston.

England Blue 5-0 Scotland (16:00)

England Blue girls recorded an emphatic win against their Scottish counterparts. The scoring started on 25 minutes with Lauren Ellwood netting. Yazi Chalal, Mollie D’Arcy Rice, Caroline Spence and Hannah de Selincourt scored the other goals for the Blues.

England White 1-1 Ulster (18:00)

The spoils were shared in this tight encounter. Ulster’s Katie McKee opened the scoring on 33 minutes, but the equaliser, and final goal of the match, was netted by Zoe Ramsay on 45 minutes.
