The Saxon Tigers bounced back from the disappointment of yesterday’s opening loss to hit Pennine Pumas for six in the opening game of the day at Oaklands College. Six different scorers found the net for Oli Bell’s side and despite a strike from Gabby House just after the break Pennine Pumas were beaten.

The game started off as quite a cagey affair with both sides sizing each other up. The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute as Rose Winter found some space in the circle and fired the ball home. It became 2-0 on the stroke of half time, as Renee Ojikutu converted a penalty corner giving the Tigers some breathing space at the break.

The next goal after half time came from the Pumas. Some great approach work allowed Gabby House the simplest of finishes to haul her side back into the contest. The tide seemed to be turning and Pumas had a gilt-edged opportunity to level the scores as they were awarded a penalty stroke. Mikayla Glover stood firm in the Tigers goal and saved, preserving her team’s advantage.
That seemed to turn the tide of the game and on 42 minutes Olivia Wilde added to her strike from yesterday, bursting into the circle and smashing home and unstoppable strike. Two minutes later Lucie Bishop increased the lead. Pumas mounted some offence as they tried to fight their way back into the contest but on 51 minutes Zoe Eifion-Jones seized on a loose ball to fire home fifth. There was still time for Orissa Welsh to open her account for the tournament with a sixth goal six minutes from time.

Mercia Lynx 2 (1)
Lunjika Nyirenda 13, 61 (FG, FG)

Caledonian Cougars 1 (0)
Eve Pearson 42 (PC)

Lunjika Nyirenda’s hot streak in front of goal continued today as the Mercia Lynx striker bagged a brace to sink the Caledonian Cougars. After netting a hat-trick in the Lynx win yesterday Nyirenda took her tally to five goals in two games and in the process helped make it two wins from two for Merica Lynx.

Cougars started brightly and applied strong pressure in the early stages. They had the ball in the net but the ball had already gone out of play in the build up and was spotted by an eagle eyed umpire.

In the 13th minute Nyirenda gave her side the lead with her fourth of the competition. She went close but was well kept out by Jessica Buchanan in the Cougars goal. Lorna Mackenzie also found the Cougars’ stopper in good form as she repelled a penalty corner strike. Pearson levelled the score with a well taken penalty corner rebound. Mercia pressed hard for a winner in the latter stages and with nine minutes remaining they got the decisive goal, Nyirenda applying the finish after a slick attacking move.
