From Waltham Forest to canoe slalom in Rio

Fiona Pennie will be competing in the K1 discipline at Rio Olympic Games today but when she isn’t on the water she also plays for Waltham Forest Hockey Club.

“I started playing hockey in school and once I left I played a bit at inter mural at Nottingham University but as kayaking began to get more serious I didn’t play much.”

“After not making the London 2012 squad I moved down to Lee Valley White water rafting centre and was determined to get to the next Olympics. I decided I would be here for at least for 4 years so thought I better make some friends! I always enjoyed hockey so thought that would be a good place to start. I wanted to find a club that was established that had a good in between club that could let me play socially and let me dip in and out due to my kayaking commitments.

“Waltham Forest hockey club were a perfect fit, they understand completely that my kayaking comes first but they will always give me a game when I am available which I am so grateful for. I think they enjoy me running around like a headless chicken most of the time! Olympic selection was back in October so I gently let them down that I would have to skip this season due to it being an Olympic year but they still keep me in the loop with everything going on at the club which is nice.

“Training sessions with my kayaking team can be quite lonely as it is just you in a boat going down the course but with hockey it is all about being in it together. So on a wet November evening we all still have a great fun when we turn up for hockey training as it is such a social able sport and Forest are a great bunch of people!”

Fiona starts her Olympic campaign today at 5.10pm in the preliminaries; we want to wish Fiona the best of luck! #HockeyFamily
