GB Super League Enters Final Frontier

After two weekends, it is the Wessex Leopards (men) and Saxon Tigers (women) who are topping the tables.  The Leopards (men) are top on goal difference and play bottom of the table Celtic Panthers in the final match before the classification games take place.  The Saxon Tigers (men) are right behind the Leopards but will need to beat third placed Caledonian Cougars who are just a point behind them to guarantee themselves a place in the final.  In the women’s league, the final looks like it will be the Saxon Tigers and Wessex Leopards who go head to head.  They take on the Pennine Pumas and Highland Jaguars respectively in the last set of round robin games.

Team News:

CELTIC PANTHERS – WOMEN
After a slow start and many changes to squad the Celtic Panthers had their first win last weekend on home turf in Swansea.
However, with one of their key defenders, Ella Rafferty, being injured early on in the first half of the match against the Wessex Leopards from a well-worked corner drag flick, changes had to be made to reinforce the defence.

Some of the younger talented players have stepped into key positions within the squad, one of which is Sophie Robinson. Sophie also scored the final goal on Sunday to secure their win.

Gemma Ible, already recognised as a talent for the future after a successful U20 GB campaign in Australia, has once again proved herself as a huge asset to the squad in goal for the Panthers

CELTIC PANTHERS – MEN
The Celtic Panthers have one main change to their squad this weekend. Full back Ed Bevan is unavailable to play on Saturday as he is attending his graduation ceremony for his PhD from Oxford University. He is replaced by Gavin Phillips, last years Wales U21 captain who plays his hockey at Bowdon, recently promoted to the Slazenger EHL Premier Division.

Reading, Wales and Panthers Captain Rhys Joyce is waiting to see if his toe injured in the game on Sunday recovers in time to lead the side out against the current leaders Leopards at 1500 on Saturday.

PENNINE PUMAS – MEN
The Pennine Pumas are delighted that Iain MacKay has finally recovered from injury to make his debut this weekend.

SAXON TIGERS – WOMEN
Injuries to Kate Walsh and Jo Ellis put them in major doubt for the final weekend of the GBSL. Dilly Newton and Sophe Bray are on standby if Kate and Jo do not pass their fitness tests later in the week.

SAXON TIGERS – MEN
Ben Hawes has been called up to join the Saxon Tigers after his club, Amsterdam, were knocked out of the Dutch Play-offs.  His call up will strengthen the Tigers defence which has been weakened due to availability.

WESSEX LEOPARDS - WOMEN
Wessex Leopards Women are looking forward to the last weekend of the GB Super League and have high hopes of ensuring a spot in the final on Sunday  it would take a nine goal swing to deny them! After a tough weekend last weekend the Leopards will be waiting on the fitness of Anne Panter (knee) and Sally Walton (knee) who both were unable to play a full part in last Sunday's game against the Tigers. Fay Nash also has a bruised thumb. All three are desperate to get the Leopards shirt on again this weekend and help the Leopards chase the inaugural GB Super League title.

WESSEX LEOPARDS - MEN
The Wessex Leopards had seven of their squad - Richard Mantell, Ashley Jackson, Martin Jones, Jonty Clarke, Scott Cordon, James Fair (GK), Richard Springham - absent during the week in Germany on England duty.

The only change in the squad will be Chris Griffiths who replaces fellow U18 and GBU21 player Nick Catlin for this weekend.
