England Hockey to recruit new coaches for senior women

Craig Parnham coaching at the London 2012 Olympic Games

England Hockey will this week begin its search for coaches to lead the senior England and Great Britain women’s hockey programme for the Olympic cycle to Rio 2016.

Following the promotion of Olympic bronze medal winning coach Danny Kerry to Performance Director and the departure of Assistant Coach Craig Parnham, who was today announced as the new Head Coach of the USA women’s field hockey team, England Hockey will seek to appoint two candidates in the coming weeks.

England Hockey Performance Director Danny Kerry said: “This is one of those rare and exciting opportunities that many coaches dream of, the chance to join an ambitious and successful team at the very pinnacle of Olympic sport. They will be joining an organisation and a team operating at the top of their game. Having progressed from 11th in the world and the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens to fourth in the world and standing on the podium at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the building blocks are in place to offer a new management team the perfect opportunity to lead the programme even further in the coming years.  With two European Championships - including the 2015 tournament here in England - the 2014 Commonwealth Games, a World Cup and the new World Hockey League to come before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the potential to build on recent successes is tremendously exciting.

“I’d like to wish Craig all the best in his new role with the USA. Craig has played an important role inside our programme for almost six years. In this time he has brought excellent people skills and a deep understanding of the player perspective. These attributes will be sorely missed and I’m sure they will stand him in good stead in his new role with US Field Hockey.”

Parnham, 39, became Assistant Coach for the senior women in April 2007.  A double Olympian (2000 and 2004), he played 115 times for England and Great Britain and captained the national team. In his time with England Hockey he has also held the roles of Head Coach to the U21 women’s team, whom he led to their best ever finish at the Junior World Cup, fourth place in Boston in 2009. That same year, Parnham joined the inaugural UK Sport Elite Coach Apprentice Programme from which he graduated in 2011. He has also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Elite Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.

The positions of Head Coach and Assistant Coach will be advertised on leading sports recruitment websites and on the England Hockey website.
