Over the first weekend of September, the popular 'Hockey Nation' campaign culminates with the Harvester National Club Weekend. Clubs across England will open their gates and warmly welcome in the local community as the sport looks to proactively build its legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The open weekend will offer people of all ages and abilities the chance to pick up a stick and ‘Give it a Go’, with no experience or equipment necessary. Children, adults and families are welcome and there will be something on offer for everyone.
Some clubs are lucky enough to be gearing up for an appearance from Team GB players having bid for the chance to win a player visit through the Great Britain Hockey Facebook page. 12 of the bronze medalists from the women's squad as well as some of the GB men's squad will be travelling around the country to visit the chosen clubs.
GB's Sarah Thomas will be visiting one of our showcase clubs, Waltham Forest. With it being just a stones throw away from the Riverbank Arena and as one of the six Olympic host boroughs, it is important that our hockey legacy makes a lasting impression in the area. Meanwhile, Sally Walton and Laura Unsworth will be making an appearance at our other showcase club, Old Silhillians. There, they will be joined by England Hockey Champion Volunteer of the Season, Stepehn Tabb, who is the club chairman. As well as the player visits, both of these venues will have Hockey Nation Roadshow Kits and Mini Smurf-turfs present.
