GB women through to Olympic last four

Great Britain’s women have qualified for the Olympic semi finals after Japan beat Beijing Olympic silver medal winners China 1-0 this afternoon. The result at the Riverbank Arena assures the GB women of a path to the final four ahead of their final Pool A match against the Netherlands, who have also qualified, this evening.

It is the first time Great Britain has qualified for the Olympic semi finals since the 1996 team in Atlanta.  That team went on to finish fourth, missing out on the bronze medal to the Netherlands on penalties.

Also qualified for the semi finals, from Pool B, are New Zealand who drew 0-0 with Germany this morning. The fourth quarter finalist with be either Australia or Argentina, who play this evening after GB v Netherlands.

The top side in each pool will play the runner up in the opposite pool in Wednesday’s semi finals.
