Want to play hockey? Get fit? Meet new people? Don’t have the time to commit to a team?  Rush Hockey’s the answer. It's fast. It's furious. It's fun. It's indoors, it's outdoors. It's smaller pitches. It's 5-a-side. Now you can play whenever and wherever you want.

With hundreds of sessions around the country, visit www.rushhockey.co.uk to find your nearest site. All abilities are catered for and playing equipment is provided, so it’s a really good opportunity to try something new!

Lincoln Roses is a hockey club already getting right into the spirit of the Olympic summer. Its hugely successful Rush Hockey programme is expanding and it will be one of more than 500 sites running Give it a Go activity over the coming weeks. We caught up with Chairman David Elworthy to find out how they’ve done it.

Why did Lincoln Roses become involved in Rush Hockey?
We’re a growing club, looking to engage with more of the community. Rush Hockey is an ideal vehicle to do to this in Lincoln.

What do players at your site like about playing Rush Hockey?
It’s a more engaging game for people of all abilities, men and women can play together and it’s a great way of maintaining fitness levels during the off season.

Have you built up player numbers over time?
The sessions have steadily been attracting more players – we regularly get in excess of 30 players – and every session up to a quarter of those attending are new to hockey. Although it’s not the main reason for running Rush Hockey, it has been a bonus to see eight new people sign up to join the club ahead of the new season.

If someone wants to play Rush Hockey what do they need to bring/wear?
Just bring themselves, suitable clothing and a drink. All other playing equipment is provided.

How does the game work with different levels of players playing together?
We are careful to make the teams mixed ability so that we can include all players in every game and everyone is encouraging each other to perform to their best ability. The bigger ball is easier for newer players to control and many players have commented that there is an increased feel of the ball due to the lightness.

How do people register to play at your Rush Hockey site?
They just register through the Rush Hockey website. It’s also fine to just turn up on the evening and we can get you registered there and then on the night.

Can people give hockey a go at your site during the Olympic Games?
Absolutely! We are running Rush Hockey, junior sessions and Back to Hockey every Tuesday night throughout the five weeks of Give It A Go, and all these sessions will then continue into the new season. We are also offering pre-season training on different nights of the week for men’s and women’s teams with structured coaching.
